Islamabad : The Pakistan-UK Education Gateway Phase 2 meeting, chaired by Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, outlined ambitious goals to elevate Pakistan’s higher education sector. The initiative, attended by key representatives including HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and British Council officials, focused on setting up a streamlined framework for new project proposals, aiming for impactful educational development.
Officials recapped the achievements of Phase 1, during which 21 research travel grants and eight large research partnership grants were awarded. Over 1,000 researchers received capacity-building training, and 51 universities established certified Offices of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC). These advancements set a strong foundation for Phase 2’s expanded initiatives.
Phase 2 of the Gateway will drive higher education productivity by focusing on internationally competitive fellowships, research commercialization, and leadership training. Structured fellowships and mutual qualification recognition are expected to promote inclusive and quality education, fostering a skilled workforce aligned with global standards.
Minister Iqbal highlighted the need for outcome-focused assessments, emphasizing that all funded projects should support Pakistan’s national development goals. He urged for targeted engagements with top-tier researchers and institutions to enhance the quality and impact of academic contributions in diverse sectors.
This new phase underscores Pakistan’s commitment to fostering a globally competitive higher education environment, positioning the country as a leader in innovation and economic growth through education.
