Pakistan, Ethiopia Agree to Deepen Cooperation in Defence and Aviation
Islamabad: Pakistan and Ethiopia on Monday agreed to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of defence and aviation as part of efforts to deepen their growing bilateral relations.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between Ethiopia’s Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, and Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif in Islamabad.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed expanding cooperation in diverse areas including peace and security, defence, aviation, climate change, trade and investment, culture, and tourism.
Ambassador Dr. Jemal briefed the Defence Minister on the recent inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), built on the principle of equitable and reasonable utilization of water. He said the project aims to foster regional integration and development without causing harm to any other country.
Highlighting Ethiopia’s progress in the aviation sector, the envoy expressed his country’s interest in expanding flight operations to Pakistan beyond the current Karachi route.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif lauded Ethiopia’s visionary leadership and commended Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed for his transformative initiatives that have advanced socio-economic development and prosperity in the country.
He also appreciated Ethiopia’s constructive role in promoting peace, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa, reaffirming Pakistan’s full support for these efforts.
