ISLAMABAD: The Polio Oversight Board (POB), a key decision-making entity of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, concluded its visit to Pakistan with a renewed emphasis on strengthening efforts to combat the ongoing polio outbreak.
During its engagements with government officials, diplomats, and donors, the POB lauded Pakistan’s progress but highlighted the urgency of addressing the outbreak’s underlying challenges, including vaccine delivery and public health infrastructure gaps.
French Ambassador Nicolas Galey, hosting a reception for the delegation, emphasized the unwavering commitment of the international community to supporting Pakistan in its polio eradication mission. His remarks underscored the collaborative efforts between Pakistan and global partners in overcoming this public health crisis.
Key discussions during the visit revolved around sustaining momentum, leveraging financial aid, and enhancing frontline operations. The delegation commended the support of entities like the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, whose collective contributions have been instrumental in advancing eradication programs.
The POB also acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s recent $500 million pledge to the global initiative, reflecting the growing international solidarity in eliminating polio. The inclusion of senior representatives from UNICEF, WHO, and other partner organizations further reinforced the shared resolve to achieve eradication goals.
As Pakistan battles a critical phase in its polio program, the POB’s visit reaffirms the need for coordinated strategies, community engagement, and sustained financial and technical support to achieve the dream of a polio-free world.
