Baku: The participants of COP29 have started to arrive in Azerbaijan, marking the beginning of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. On Saturday, Feleti Teo, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, was among the first to land in Baku, greeted with a warm welcome at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Farid Gayibov, alongside other dignitaries. The airport, adorned with the flags of both countries, served as a symbol of hospitality and diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Tuvalu.
Following Prime Minister Teo’s arrival, Philip Isdor Mpango, Vice President of Tanzania, touched down in Azerbaijan to participate in the crucial discussions at COP29. Upon his arrival, Vice President Mpango was received by Minister Farid Gayibov and Tanzanian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Cosato David Chumi, highlighting Tanzania’s commitment to addressing climate change in collaboration with the international community.
The Republic of the Marshall Islands also joined the distinguished roster of attendees with the arrival of President Hilda Heine. The official reception, led once again by Minister Gayibov, welcomed President Heine at the airport decorated in the colors of both nations, reflecting the solidarity shared between Azerbaijan and the Marshall Islands in tackling global climate issues.
The Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), Salim M. Al Malik, also arrived in Azerbaijan on Saturday to participate in COP29. At Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Deputy Minister of Culture Murad Huseynov and other officials warmly welcomed Al Malik, underscoring Azerbaijan’s commitment to engaging diverse international organizations in the global fight against climate change.
As leaders and representatives from around the world gather for COP29, Azerbaijan’s role as host underscores its dedication to fostering international cooperation in the fight against climate change. The high-profile arrivals signal the commencement of discussions that aim to drive collective action and long-term solutions for environmental resilience across the globe.
