Islamabad: The Governments of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia announced on Friday the establishment of a dedicated park in Islamabad to promote fraternity and brotherhood between the two nations, as part of their ongoing bilateral cooperation on climate change. This park will be inaugurated next month.
The announcement was made during a joint press briefing at the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad, attended by H.E. Jemal Beker Abdula, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, H.E. Romina Khursheed Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, and H.E. Muhammad Ali Randhawa, Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Commissioner Islamabad.
Following the press briefing, a tree plantation ceremony took place, contributing to Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, where 600 million seedlings were planted in one day. The event saw participation from various sectors of society, including government officials, diplomats, and members of civil society, who planted saplings at the Embassy.
Ambassador Jemal Beker Abdula expressed his gratitude to Pakistan for supporting Ethiopia’s monumental tree plantation initiative and highlighted the Ethio-Pakistan Fraternity under the Green Legacy Initiative, which has led to the creation of parks and enclaves in Pakistan dedicated to this cause.
Romina Khursheed Alam emphasized the significance of the collaboration, noting that the Ethio-Pakistan Fraternity Programme had already made substantial progress since its launch last year. She praised the Green Legacy Initiative as a global model for combating climate change and expressed Pakistan’s eagerness to adopt Ethiopia’s best practices.
CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa lauded the Ethiopian Ambassador’s efforts in addressing climate change and reaffirmed CDA’s commitment to collaborating with the Ethiopian Embassy to promote the green initiative. He also mentioned the CDA’s own “Selfie with Plant” initiative to encourage public participation in plantation activities.
