Islamabad: The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted a Pakistan-Malaysia think-tank dialogue with the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) from Malaysia, coinciding with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Pakistan. The Malaysian delegation was led by Dr. Maszlee bin Malik, former Minister of Education and Chairman of IAIS.
The dialogue focused on strengthening Pakistan-Malaysia relations and expanding Pakistan’s engagement with ASEAN. A key highlight of the event was the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ISSI and IAIS, aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two institutions in areas of mutual interest.
Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of ISSI, welcomed the delegation and emphasized the significance of the dialogue. He noted that the meeting symbolized a deepening relationship, especially as it coincided with the Malaysian Prime Minister’s visit. He further appreciated Malaysia’s consistent support in promoting Pakistan’s ties with ASEAN.
Dr. Maszlee bin Malik stressed the historical ties between the two countries, underscoring the potential for collaboration in areas such as education, IT, artificial intelligence, and tourism. He also emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy and expressed optimism for future cooperation as Malaysia gears up to chair ASEAN in 2025.
Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director of the China-Pakistan Study Centre at ISSI, highlighted ISSI’s initiatives in fostering relations with ASEAN, including the establishment of an “ASEAN Corner” in the ISSI library to promote greater understanding of the region.
The event concluded with an exchange of publications and Dr. Maszlee’s visit to the ASEAN Corner, further solidifying Pakistan-Malaysia think-tank collaboration.
