Islamabad: The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted a pivotal roundtable on “SCO: A Catalyst for Regional Integration and Connectivity.” The event gathered diplomats, scholars, and experts to highlight the growing significance of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in fostering regional cooperation, security, and economic development.
Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General ISSI, underscored the SCO’s global stature as the largest transregional platform, contributing significantly to the evolving multipolar world order. He emphasized the importance of patience in the organization’s growth and progress, while highlighting the notable increase in trade among SCO members.
Dr. Saif Malik, Director of the Army Institute of Military History, elaborated on the SCO’s critical role in countering terrorism, particularly addressing threats posed by ISIS and ISKP. He also touched upon the complexities of regional geopolitics involving Pakistan, India, China, and Russia.
Ms. Amna Masood, from the International Islamic University Islamabad, focused on leveraging the SCO platform to enhance Pakistan’s trade and technological ties with Central Asian and South Asian nations. She noted that the upcoming CHG meeting offers new opportunities for economic and cultural cooperation.
Dr. Uzma Siraj, Head of International Relations at Federal Urdu University, highlighted the potential for regional connectivity through digital infrastructure, sustainability, and educational exchanges, underlining SCO’s role in fostering these areas.
Ambassador Babar Amin, Pakistan’s First National Coordinator for SCO, showcased Pakistan’s achievements in advancing economic cooperation, connectivity, and security initiatives during its chairmanship. He stressed Pakistan’s strategic contribution to regional transport and security collaboration.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman of ISSI’s Board of Governors, commended the roundtable’s organization ahead of the CHG Summit, emphasizing the need for stronger coordination among member states to unlock SCO’s full potential.
The roundtable concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, sparking insightful discussions on regional security, cooperation, and the future trajectory of the SCO in a shifting global landscape.
