Islamabad: Pakistan and Japan formalized a significant Grant-in-Aid project worth USD 9.91 million aimed at improving maternal and child health in flood-affected and surrounding areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, with Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, signing on behalf of Pakistan, and H.E. Takano Shuichi, Charge d’Affaires ad Interim of Japan, representing the Japanese government. This project underscores the collaborative efforts of the two countries in addressing pressing healthcare challenges.
The grant, funded through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to strengthen diagnostic and treatment systems in the flood-affected regions. It will enhance the regional referral system by providing vital medical equipment for maternal and child health services, with a special focus on high-risk pregnancies and newborn care. The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the province, particularly in areas severely impacted by recent natural disasters.
Secretary Dr. Kazim Niaz expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for their generous support and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare. He acknowledged the longstanding partnership between the two countries and assured full facilitation for the project’s successful implementation. The Federal Minister of Economic Affairs, Ahad Cheema, also conveyed his appreciation for Japan’s continued cooperation in addressing Pakistan’s healthcare needs.
H.E. Takano Shuichi reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to strengthening its bilateral ties with Pakistan and highlighted the importance of the project in fostering goodwill and friendship between the two nations. He emphasized Japan’s resolve to work closely with Pakistan in tackling shared challenges and advancing mutual development goals.
