Islamabad: Pakistan and Maldives have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations by forming Joint Working Groups (JWGs) on tourism, trade, labor, investment, and aviation. This decision was made during a meeting between Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema and Maldivian High Commissioner to Pakistan Muhammad Thoha. The initiative falls under the Pakistan-Maldives Joint Commission, with an inaugural session scheduled for early 2025.
Federal Minister Cheema emphasized Pakistan’s interest in expanding cooperation with the Maldives in various economic sectors. He invited the Maldivian side to explore Pakistan’s industries in halal meat, agricultural products, fruits, and surgical instruments. High Commissioner Thoha responded positively, noting the strategic location of Karachi relative to Maldivian ports as a potential boost for bilateral trade.
Both leaders also discussed the shared role of Pakistan and the Maldives in regional and international forums, such as SAARC and OIC, particularly in addressing climate change challenges. They agreed to strengthen their collaboration on such multilateral platforms.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from both sides to deepen their bilateral relationship and enhance economic, cultural, and political ties for mutual benefit.
