Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to environmental sustainability. They were addressing at the International Maritime Business and Finance conference in Islamabad.
Ishaq Dar emphasized Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change and stressed the importance of modernizing the fisheries and shipbreaking sectors with advanced technologies to meet global standards.
Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, in his welcome address, underscored Pakistan’s compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) regulations. He pointed out Pakistan’s strategic location and extensive 11,000-kilometer coastline, which enhance its importance in the maritime sector. Sheikh reiterated the government’s efforts to adopt green technologies and reduce the country’s global environmental footprint.
The Minister further highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to safeguarding biodiversity and oceans, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. He expressed readiness to collaborate with international bodies to promote shipbuilding, ship recycling, and the blue economy. Sheikh also thanked global partners, particularly China and Norway, for their technical support in advancing Pakistan’s maritime sector.
