Islamabad: Pakistan and the United Kingdom have agreed to enhance bilateral ties by focusing on diverse sectors, including human rights, justice reforms, and climate change. The commitment was underscored during a meeting between Pakistan’s Minister for Law, Azam Nazeer Tarar, and the UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, Hamish Falconer.
The discussions highlighted Pakistan’s strides in human rights, with particular attention to the National Action Plan on Human Rights. Minister Tarar emphasized the plan’s pivotal role in streamlining policy reforms and aligning national practices with international conventions. The protection of minority rights under Pakistan’s Constitution was also a focal point of the deliberations.
Addressing environmental concerns, Minister Tarar informed the UK delegation about a landmark constitutional amendment that enshrines the right to a clean and sustainable environment as a fundamental right. He underlined Pakistan’s efforts to integrate climate action into its governance framework.
Hamish Falconer lauded Pakistan’s initiatives, particularly its dedication to justice reforms and proactive climate policies. He praised the government’s constitutional recognition of environmental rights, calling it a progressive step towards sustainable development.
The UK official reaffirmed his country’s support for Pakistan through technical assistance and collaborative programs. He expressed optimism about jointly achieving shared goals in human rights and environmental protection, solidifying the foundation for stronger bilateral cooperation.
