TASHKENT: Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Senator Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, delivered a powerful and thought-provoking address at the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, urging global parliaments to unite in pursuit of social justice, equity, and inclusive development.
Speaking during the General Debate themed “Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice,” Chairman Gilani emphasized that ideals such as justice, dignity, and equality must be transformed into tangible realities for all. He highlighted the crucial role of parliaments in shaping inclusive societies through legislative action and political will.
Chairman Gilani lauded the Government and people of Uzbekistan for their gracious hospitality and praised the IPU for fostering global parliamentary dialogue and collaboration. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to inclusive development through legislative reforms, citing landmark initiatives such as the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and universal healthcare coverage.
Underscoring the importance of social protection, youth empowerment, and gender equity, Gilani pointed to Pakistan’s strides in legal reforms benefiting women, youth, informal sector workers, and persons with disabilities. He called for global solidarity in support of a New Social Contract and advocated for equitable fiscal policies and people-centered governance.
In a strong condemnation of international silence on human rights violations, Chairman Gilani drew attention to the atrocities in Palestine and Indian-occupied Kashmir, terming them a collective failure of global conscience.
Calling for collective parliamentary action, he urged nations to work together ahead of the Second World Summit for Social Development, with a focus on redefining progress and ensuring development that leaves no one behind.
Concluding his address, Chairman Gilani reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to justice, equality, and international cooperation, stating, “A just society is not built on words but on action. Let us legislate wisely and act together to build a future rooted in dignity, equity, and shared prosperity.”
The 150th IPU Assembly continues to serve as a vital platform for dialogue among global lawmakers committed to building a fairer and more inclusive world.
