Astana : Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his national statement at the SCO Council of Heads of State Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the SCO Charter and principles. He expressed support for the organization’s expansion and reforms, welcoming Belarus as a new member and congratulating President Xi Jinping on assuming the SCO Chair for 2024-25.
Emphasizing the significance of cooperation with SCO in Pakistan’s foreign policy, the Prime Minister called for collective efforts to achieve socioeconomic development. He advocated for enhanced regional connectivity through efficient transport corridors and reliable supply chains, highlighting Pakistan as a pivotal trade conduit for the region, supported by the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Addressing climate change, the Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to sustainability and welcomed the SCO Agreement on Environmental Protection. He urged developed countries to increase support for developing nations in their climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Highlighting the financial challenges faced by SCO countries due to global conflicts and pandemics, the Prime Minister called for collective efforts to raise living standards in the region. He stressed the shared interest of SCO Member States in ensuring regional peace and stability, particularly in Afghanistan.
The Prime Minister strongly advocated for collective and comprehensive action against terrorism and extremism, condemning violence and divisive policies based on prejudice and discrimination. He emphasized the need for respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right to self-determination, urging the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions to resolve long-standing disputes.
The Prime Minister condemned Israel’s actions and called for an immediate ceasefire, advocating for a two-state solution with pre-1967 borders and Al-Quds as its capital. He concluded by expressing Pakistan’s eagerness to host the SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting in Islamabad, aiming to promote steady development and seeking active collaboration from all SCO Member States.
