Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the United Nations, particularly in sustainable development and climate change. During a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, he underscored Pakistan’s political will to combat climate change in close partnership with the UN and the international community. The premier highlighted the importance of climate financing as a critical component in addressing climate challenges and expressed hope that developed nations would fulfill their financial commitments in this regard.
Appreciating the efforts of the UN Country Team in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz conveyed his warm regards to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, recalling his leadership in mobilizing global support for Pakistan during the 2022 floods. He reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to working closely with the UN on climate-related initiatives, emphasizing the need for effective implementation of various projects aimed at mitigating climate change impacts.
The prime minister also stressed the importance of addressing the financing gap in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He called for reforms in the global financial architecture to enhance the representation and voice of developing nations in international financial institutions. Strengthening Pakistan-UN cooperation in these areas, he noted, would be crucial for advancing sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
