Baku : A high-level six-member Pakistani delegation, led by Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, called on COP29 President and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, to discuss bilateral climate cooperation. Both sides emphasized shared goals of environmental sustainability and building resilience against climate change.
Romina congratulated the Azerbaijani leadership on hosting COP29 in Baku, where over 196 countries are negotiating critical issues such as climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building. She appreciated Azerbaijan’s active engagement in global climate efforts, including its foreign minister’s participation in Pakistan’s Climate Finance Roundtable chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
During the meeting, Romina reiterated Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change despite its negligible contribution to global emissions. Highlighting the need for $348 billion by 2030 to implement its climate resilience and mitigation plans, she urged for enhanced international support under mechanisms like the Loss and Damage Fund, established at COP27 with Pakistan’s leadership.
Mukhtar Babayev assured Pakistan of Azerbaijan’s commitment to supporting its climate resilience goals, pledging cooperation in addressing critical risks and improving adaptive capacity. He also praised Pakistan’s advocacy for increased funding and technology transfer from developed nations to help the Global South tackle climate impacts effectively.
Romina announced Pakistan’s plans to host a V20 conference next year to strengthen regional and global partnerships among climate-vulnerable nations. The conference will focus on sharing strategies to combat risks affecting agriculture, water, energy, and infrastructure in developing countries.
Both sides expressed hope that COP29 would result in concrete commitments from wealthy nations to honor their climate finance pledges. They reaffirmed their dedication to advancing a united stance among developing countries to secure meaningful outcomes from the negotiations.
