Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, has urged vulnerable nations to unite in pursuit of climate justice, highlighting the critical role of judicial systems in addressing global environmental challenges. Speaking at a high-level panel discussion titled “Judicial Pathways Towards Climate Justice” at the Pakistan Pavilion on the sidelines of the UN climate summit, she underscored the need for collective action.
Alam revealed that the initiative to create a platform for international judges dedicated to climate justice was a personal endeavor aimed at bolstering Pakistan’s advocacy for climate finance in the Global South. She termed the event a significant step toward institutionalizing judicial contributions to climate action.
During the discussion, Alam emphasized the expanding role of courts in tackling climate issues, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. She expressed satisfaction with the success of the panel in fostering dialogue among judges on judicial approaches to address the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change.
She noted the critical responsibility of judicial bodies in balancing environmental priorities with the socio-economic needs of vulnerable nations. Alam concluded by reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to advancing climate justice and strengthening the capacity of legal frameworks to respond to the escalating impacts of climate change.
