Astana : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the potential for expanding bilateral trade between Pakistan and Russia. Shehbaz pointed out that the current trade volume, standing at around $1 billion, could significantly increase by addressing financial and banking issues.
During his visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, the prime minister expressed his pleasure in reconnecting with President Putin, recalling their previous interaction in Samarkand. Shehbaz congratulated Putin on his re-election, expressing confidence in Russia’s continued progress under his leadership.
Shehbaz emphasized the positive trajectory of Pakistan-Russia relations over the past several years and his readiness to work closely with Putin to strengthen these ties further. He acknowledged the recent Russian oil shipment to Pakistan, expressing a desire for continued cooperation in this area.
Highlighting the long-standing business relationship between the two nations, Shehbaz noted that Pakistan-Russia ties are independent of geopolitical influences. He reminisced about the barter trade era from the 1950s to the 1970s, emphasizing the historical depth of their economic exchanges.
President Putin, in his remarks, also recalled their earlier meeting in Samarkand, reinforcing the mutual interest in improving bilateral relations. The discussions underscored both leaders’ commitment to deepening economic cooperation and building on their historical ties.
